The Canterbury Westland Section offers a full pathway of climbing courses to help members build their skills step by step — from your very first day on real rock through to advanced rescue techniques. Whether you’re brand new to outdoor climbing or already leading trad, there’s a course designed for you.
Our Intro to Top Rope Climbing course is the perfect starting point. You’ll learn the basics of tying in, belaying, climbing movement, and staying safe at the crag. This is aimed at anyone transitioning from the gym or trying outdoor climbing for the first time.
Once you’re comfortable on top rope, the next step is Intro to Sport Climbing. Here you’ll learn how to lead on bolts, clip quickdraws, belay a lead climber, and clean anchors. It’s the foundation of becoming an independent outdoor climber.
Ready to climb higher? Our Intro to Sport Multi-Pitch course takes you onto longer bolted climbs with multiple rope lengths. You’ll practice stance management, rope systems, and efficient transitions between pitches.
If you want to move beyond bolts, our Intro to Trad Climbing introduces gear placements, anchors, and leading single-pitch trad routes. Once confident, you can step up to Intro to Trad Multi-Pitch, where you’ll apply those skills on longer, more committing routes.
For those who already have multi-pitch experience, the Multi-Pitch Rescue Course is an essential step. You’ll learn to deal with emergencies on the wall: escaping belays, hauling systems, counterbalance abseils, and retreating safely.
Taken together, these courses provide a structured pathway:
• Beginner → Intro to Top Rope
• Progressing → Sport Lead & Multi-Pitch
• Traditional climbing → Trad Lead & Multi-Pitch
• Advanced → Rescue Skills
Courses are run progressively throughout the summer months with limited spaces to keep instruction focused. Keep an eye on our website and newsletter for upcoming dates, sign-up and information, or get in touch with Natasha to register your interest!
